Empirical track-length range relationship for heavy ions in solid compounds

Description

An empirical relation between track length and range of heavy ions in solid state detectors is obtained for ions of mass M < 141 a.m.u. and initial energies up to 12 MeV/nucleon. This relation is found d to be T 1(E)=S.R(E) where S =δ(1-cρ) [1-ψ (dE/d X)-Cr] in which ( dE/d X)-Cr is the critical stopping power of the detector,ρ is the density of the detector material,and C,δ,and ψ are constants. The relation is examined for six different target materials and is found to be in good agreement with experimental and computed values obtained by different investigators.1 tab., 6 fig
