Position sensitive low pressure multistep avalanche chambers for measuring neutron induced light reaction products

  • 1. Zentralinstitut fuer Kernforschung, Rossendorf bei Dresden (German Democratic Republic)

Description

We describe a position sensitive multistep gaseous detector designed for the detection of protons and deuterons with energies up to 25 MeV. It consists of a preamplification stage operating as a parallel plate avalanche chamber coupled via a transfer region to a multiwire proportional chamber. The detector operates at a pressure of 16 mbar. It has a high gain, good time resolution (about 500 ps) and localization properties (spatial resolution 320 μm FWHM) in two dimensions. Its efficiency for 15 MeV deuterons was found to be 98%. (orig.)
