Production of 29Al by the 26Mg(α,p)29Al reaction and its tracer use

Description
Aluminium-29 (half-life: 6.6 min) was produced by the 26Mg( α,p) 29Al reaction. The excitation function and thick target yield were measured for this reaction and by-product formation reactions up to 40 MeV energy. The desirable incident energy for this production is about 30 MeV. No-carrier-added 29Al is separated satisfactorily by adsorption on cellulose powder or by solvent extraction as acetylacetonate. The 29Al was employed as tracer for adsorption by soils, uptake by plants, and distribution in mouse organs to demonstrate its utility. (author)
