Description

This paper presents an outline of the examination of the earthquake records in Japan for use in the IAEA CRP on the safety significance of NFEs. In the paper, we first review the expert opinions on NFEs regarding their properties from the viewpoints of their safety significance on structures. Secondly, we briefly describe the Japanese earthquake experiences of the past 100 years. Thirdly, we introduce recent progress on earthquake observation systems in Japan since the 1995 Hyogo-ken Nanbu earthquake. We then list the recent typical NFE ground motion records obtained mainly since 1995, and show our selected recommendation list of records. Finally, we chose two records as candidates for the IAEA CRP project. (author)
