Fission track dating of various regions of Iran
Description
Experiments have been performed to determine the age of natural minerals. The motivation for this work has come from interest of scientists to collect more information and evidence to yield the history of our country's geology. The technique we use is fission track dating(F.T.D.) method which has given useful results in a number of problems and its future look promising. The technique is especially useful in dating young samples (specimen in the range from 2*104 to 106 years) and also is able to measure the age of individual small grains in a rock aggregate.The samples we examined are apatite (from Hormoz island and the cities of Bafgh, Zarigan, Urumiah and Ferdos), sphene (from city of Hamadan) and obsidian (from Azarbaijan province). The results of age determination are in agreement with the values obtained by other methods within the range of statistical errors. We also examined the effect of crystallographic orientation of apatite on age determination, the calculated ages show maximum values in plane parallels to c-axis and minimum values in the perpendicular plane
