Use of computer simulated γ-ray spectra in activation analysis

Description
The methodology and use of the simulation of γ-ray spectra in activation analysis is described. Two different pulse-height distributions, with trapezoidal and rectangular shape Compton continuum, respectively, were considered and the detection limits were calculated. These were compared for the case of neutron activation of botanical samples with those obtained when a constant background is assumed. This latter approach was found to be unsatisfactory while excellent agreement was obtained between experimental detection limits and those derived from the simulated γ-ray spectra. Computer simulation of γ-ray spectra is a rapid and cost effective means for optimizing activation analysis capabilities. (Auth.)
