Environmentally assisted cracking in light water reactors: critical issues and recommended research
Description
This report addresses the problem of environmentally assisted cracking in light-water reactor components. The field experience is reviewed, the current utility/industry effort to solve the problem is discussed, and the remaining unresolved technical issues are identified. The additional research and development needed by the NRC to develop an independent capability to evaluate current stress-corrosion cracking problems in light-water reactors and their potential solutions is assessed. The problems and research are divided into six general areas: (1) Leak Detection and Nondestructive Evaluation, (2) Analysis of Sensitization, (3) Analysis of Crack Growth, (4) Nonenvironmental Corrective Actions, (5) Environmental Corrective Actions, and (6) Basic Understanding of Stress-corrosion cracking
