Description

With the purpose of testing the predictions of the model of inelastic intermediate states of the continuous spectrum for backward pion-deuteron scattering we have measured differential cross sections for the inclusive reactions π-p→pX-, π-n→p-X--, and π+p→pX+ with emission of a proton at 00 and at pion momenta 1.84, 2.22, and 2.63 GeV/c. The range of masses of the system was 0.8<M2/sub x/<2.0 GeV2 and the value of the squared momentum transfer to the proton varies from 1.0 (GeV/c)2 to 2.5 (GeV/c)2. On the basis of the data obtained we calculated in the framework of this model the cross section for pion-deuteron backward scattering at the mentioned energies. The value and energy dependence of the calculated cross section turned out to be different from the experimental one. We analyze the reasons for this discrepancy
