A0538 - 66 in outburst: a buried neutron star

Description
The first time-resolved X-ray spectral data of the periodic transient source AO538-66 were collected with the monitor proportional counter on the Einstein Observatory in the winter of 1980-81. The low energy absorption of the spectrum is substantial and is strongly anticorrelated with source intensity. This behaviour, and the unexpected thermal nature of the spectrum, can be understood in terms of an accreting neutron star surrounded by a hot Alfven shell and enveloped, during its periastron passage, in the distended atmosphere of its B star companion.
