Optimization of the "vortex" type mixing grid design for the WWER fuel assemblies

  • 1. State Scientific Center of the Russian Federation –Institute for Physics and Power Engineering, Obninsk (Russian Federation)

Description

The features of mixing grid (MG) application in the upper part of WWER fuel assemblies for steam removal from the fuel elements' surfaces and increasing the margin to the critical heat flux (CHF) are considered on the basis of calculating data. In this connection, possible trends for optimizing the MG design for the "Vortex" MG are discussed, such as the decrease of hydraulic resistance and increase of the length of the area with the grid effect on the steam phase distribution. The results of calculations are presented as a justification of solutions proposed. (authors)
