Proton scattering at intermediate energies: excitation of collective states and dispersive effects

Description
A coupled channel formalism has been developed where the virtual excitations and de-excitations of the nucleus during the scattering process are taken into account. Treated to all orders, it is completely equivalent to the Glauber's multiple scattering theory. Applied in 12C to the excitation of the rotational 0+(g.s), 2+(4.44 MeV) and 4+(14.08 MeV) levels, it has been shown that the dispersive effects are very important. The fact to retain, at most, the two-step processes is a good approximation of the full Glauber calculation
Abstract (French)
On a developpe un formalisme en ondes couplees qui permet de decrire les excitations et desexcitations virtuelles du noyau pendant le temps de collision. Traite a tous les ordres, il est equivalent a la theorie de la diffusion multiple de Glauber. On a applique ce formalisme a l'etude de la diffusion de protons de 1 GeV sur 12C et montre que le couplage entre etats rotationnels 0+(g.s), 2+(4,44 MeV) et 4+(14,08 MeV) conduit a des effets dispersifs importants. Il apparait egalement que le fait de ne retenir que les processus a deux etapes constitue une tres bonne approximation du calcul complet de l'amplitude de GlauberAdditional details
