A study of thyroid function with 125J

Description
A method of examination of thyroid function with 125J is suggested, with the purpose of reducing the radiation doses. Conventional 131J examination gives considerable radiation load to the critical organ, the gonads and the whole body. The method was introduced in routine practice, using the one-channel ERDA-analyzer (Bulgarian produce), whose optimal work data were adjusted to detect 125J radiation. Previous experimental studies helped to determine the optimal 125J activities, which ought to be applied to patients - 185 kBq. For objective assessment of the two radionuclides the authors used the quantitative method of V. I. Levine with the quality criterion induced by him. These studies showed that the criterion correlation for 125J to 131J was 3,2:1, i.e. 125J is the better radionuclide for thyroid function assay. The method has the following advantages over the conventional 131'J examination: lowers the radiaton load to the patient by approximately two times; reduces the radiation load to the staff by about 7 times; saves foreign currency; quality criterion is higher; the registration effectiveness of gamma irradiation is higher and the background smaller in comparison with 131J; it is more effective with regard to hormonal synthesis
