A comparative study of health hazards and environmental impacts for electricity generation through nuclear energy hidroelectricity and coal fired thermoeletrical generation

Description

Environmental impacts and health hazards were comparatively assessed in regard to electricity generation via nuclear energy, hidraulic dams and coal firing. The main aspects covered the nuclear reactor and its associated nuclear fuel cycle, coal fired thermoelectrical power plant its associated coal industry, and hidroelectrical power plant and its dam. Besides specific comparisons of impacts in the air, water, soil and health hazards an evaluation for the Brazilian case was made based on a forecast of electricity demand up to the year 2020. For the nuclear option the consequences were analysed based on American data since no data is yet available for Brazil. Coal firing option was also analised for based heavily on American data due to small Brazilian experience in this sector of energy generation. For hydroelectrical option Brazilian data were used mostly from CESP for comparative purposes. These alternatives for generation of electricity considered in this study are the most relevant for the next four decades for Brazil. (Author)

Abstract (Portuguese)

Consideracoes foram feitas sobre os impactos ambientais e os riscos a saude publica derivados da geracao de eletricidade via nuclear, hidraulica e termica a carvao mineral. Os principais aspectos desta comparacao cobriram o reator nuclear e seu ciclo de combustivel nuclear, usina termoeletrica a carvao mineral e industria carbonifera correlata, construcao da represa e usina hidroeletrica. Apos uma analise comparativa especifica, a saber, alteracoes na agua, no ar, no solo e na saude publica, por MW gerado por cada alternativa, uma avaliacao geral para o caso brasileiro foi feita, baseada na previsao da demanda de eletricidade ate o ano 2020. Para o caso da energia nuclear as consequencias, tanto para a saude publica como para o ambiente, foram calcadas em dados americanos, dada a evidente inexistencia de dados brasileiros. Para o caso carboeletrico, tambem, baseou-se acentuadamente em parametros americanos, dada a pequena producao de carvao nacional, atualmente. Quanto a hidroeletricidade, fez-se um levantamento de alteracoes ambientais e riscos a saude publica no Brasil, junto a CESP, sobretudo para sua comparacao com os dois outros metodos de producao de eletricidade. Essas tres modalidades energeticas sao as mais relevantes para o programa nacional de geracao eletrica nas proximas quatro decadas. (Autor)
