An evaluation of light water breeder reactor system (LWBR) as an alternative for nuclear power generation in Brazil
Description
The LWBR system as an alternative for nuclear power generation in Brazil, was technically and economically evaluated. The LWBR system has been characterized comparatively with the Pressurized Water Reactors through technological and investment cost analysis and through the analysis of the processes and unit costs of the fuel cycle stages. The characteristics of the LWBR system in comparison to the PWR system, with respect to utilization and cumulative consumption of uranium and thorium resources, fuel cycle processes and associated costs have been determined for possible alternatives of nuclear power participation in the Brazilian hidro-thermal electricity generating system. The analysis concluded that the LWBR system does not represent an attractive alternative for nuclear power generation in Brazil and even has no potential to compete with conventional Pressurized Water Reactors. Realizou-se uma avaliacao tecnica e economica do Sistema de Reatores a Agua Leve (LWBR) no Brasil. O sistema LWBR foi caracterizado comparativamente com os reatores PWR, atraves da sua analise tecnologica e de seus custos de investimento, e da analise dos processos industriais e dos custos unitarios das etapas dos ciclos de combustiveis. As caracteristicas do sistema LWBR em comparacao com as do sistema PWR, quanto a utilizacao e consumo cumulativo de recursos de uranio e torio e de processos do ciclos de combustiveis e custos associados, foram determinadas para possiveis alternativas de participacao da geracao nucleletrica no sistema hidrotermico brasileiro. A analise desenvolvida conduziu a conclusao de que o sistema LWBR nao representa uma alternativa atrativa para a geracao nucleletrica no Brasil e tampouco apresenta potencialidades para competir com os PWR convencionais.
