Description
The nuclear activity in Argentina has been generating and generates a significant amount of wastes that are waiting at interim deposits for a conditioning process in order to be managed properly at a later stage. A widely used process for the conditioning of organic matrix wastes is heat treatment. Nevertheless, it is necessary to take into account that thermal decomposition of this kind of wastes can lead in the formation of complex gas streams, formed by compounds of diverse nature and toxicity, which should be processed in a safe and efficient way (generally through a post-combustion stage) in order to satisfy air emission regulations both from the environmental viewpoint as radiological aspects. In previous lab-scale studies of our group, it has been documented that the treatment of ion exchange resins using low temperature pyrolysis (300- 350°C) allows to obtain a stable and chemically inert product with a significant volume reduction (>50%). On the other hand, studies of gaseous streams conditioning with model compounds of interest (associated with possible gaseous by-products generated during thermal degradation of resins) using plasma, showed a high destruction and removal efficiency (>99,9%) for various reaction media evaluated. This efficiency was obtained at considerably low reactor temperatures and with moderate power consumption. At the same time, the efficiency of H2O was highlighted as reagent under plasma conditions. This paper presents a bench scale system for the pyrolytic treatment of ion exchange resins coupled to the flow conditioning of the gaseous effluents in a plasma reactor. The generated gas stream was characterized and the composition of the gases after the plasma treatment was evaluated. It is emphasized that both processes are low temperature and flameless. The first results are promising and present the combination of these processes as a simple, safe and effective alternative for the treatment of spent ion exchange resins and the gaseous effluents generated fulfilling low environmental impact principles. Abstract (Spanish)
