Description

Assuming a resonance parametrisation to extrapolate the soft pion amplitude to the physical region, we find that meson-nucleon resonance effects suppress most of the Current Algebra p → etae+ decay amplitude but only slightly modify other decay amplitudes. The decays p → ωe+ and p → rho0e+ are also computed using the divergence of the vector currents (or Born term). In the standard SU(5) model, the decay p → π0e+, p → ωe+, and p → K0μ+ are the most important modes with branching ratios 40%, 10% and 6% respectively. From the nonrelativistic harmonic oscillator wave function, the proton lifetime is found to be tau(p) = 1.02 x 1029 yrs for Msub(X) = 4 x 1014 GeV
