Description

The backward peaking which occurs for the largest transfer of momentum in (p,d) backward elastic scattering indicates one-nucleon exchange (ONE) mechanism. It is interesting to note that the ONE cross-section divided by the kinematical factor is universal function of the momentum transfer Q and is independent of energy. The ONE cross-section divided by the kinematical factor by using the recent model wavefunctions for the S- and D-states of the deuteron have been evaluated. The universal curve obtained by using these wavefunctions compares well with that obtained from the Reid-soft-core potential. Theoretical calculations of the tensor polarization T20 in the backward (p,d) elastic scattering using the recently proposed deuteron wavefunctions which take into account their behaviour at short, medium and large distances and also the proper percentage of the D-state admixture have also been made. The results agree well with those expected and show the suitability of these model wavefunctions for various phenomena involving the deuteron. (author). 12 refs., 2 figs., 2 tabs
