The early stages of solar flares

Observations around the onset time of solar flares are reviewed. Particular attention is given to those processes which are important for an understanding of the energetics of a flare. The observations are put in the context of outstanding questions relevant to the development of solar flare models. Eight specific measurements are selected which the author believes are generally applicable to large flares and which provide critical constraints on the boundary conditions for models. (author)
