Computer simulation of the multiple scattering of high energy heavy ions in thin films
Description
A Monte-Carlo method is applied to describe the multiple scattering of fast heavy particles (MeV-region) by amorphous metal films. Different potentials are fitted to a screened Coulomb potential supplying rather simple connections between impact parameter and deflection angle for the single interactions. The energy loss of the charged particles is taken into account. The calculations yield the angular and energy distribution of the scattered particles together with the percentage distribution of the complete particle histories. The results are compared to experimental multiple scattering distributions of fission fragments in thin films. Furthermore differences and agreement concerning other theoretical results are discussed. As an example for the further application of the computational program, the scattering of high-energy ions (4 MeV/nucleon) by an edge-shaped slit is calculated. (U.S.)
