Description
Aerial surveying of the area of and surrounding the former US Air Force base at Greenham Common to assess gamma radiation levels over the whole district have shown that areas within the base show no higher levels than the control area. However, data for the nearby Aldermaston site (previously used for nuclear weapons research), reveals that weapons-grade uranium has contaminated the site. As no higher gamma radiation levels were found at Greenham Common, concern over high incidences of leukaemia in surrounding rural Berkshire remains unexplained. (UK)
