Suppression of the transition temperature in a one-dimensional superconductor

  • 1. Department of Physics, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana 47907

Description

We have studied the superconducting transition in In wires with diameters, d, as small as 400 A. We find that the transition temperature is suppressed below the bulk value, by an amount ΔT/sub c/ which varies as ≅d/sup -1/, and has a magnitude of approximately 0.1 K for our smallest wires. The magnitude of ΔT/sub c/ does not appear to be consistent with recent theories which treat the effect of disorder on T/sub c/ in one dimension
