The detection of thermal neutrons by scintillation with a resolving time of 10-8 s

Description

The authors have studied a thermal neutron detector of short resolving time, consisting of a gaseous scintillator and a target of fissile material. The detector has the following characteristics: luminous intensity proportional to the energy imparted to the gas by the fission products; resolving time 2.3 x 10-9 s; almost complete insensitivity to γ-rays. When the detector is used in conjunction with a photomultiplier, the information is collected in the form of electric pulses of high amplitude (from several volts to several tens of volts) and can be transmitted over some distance and recorded without difficulty. The apparatus described can be used for measuring neutron flux in reactors (power control) and for studying reactor kinetics by the oscillation method. (author)

Abstract (French)

Les auteurs ont etudie un detecteur de neutrons thermiques a faible temps de resolution constitue par un scintillateur gazeux et une cible de materiau fissile, presentant les caracteristiques suivantes: intensite lumineuse proportionnelle a l'energie cedee au gaz par les produits de fission, temps de resolution egal a 2,3 · 10-9 s, sensibilite negligeable aux rayons γ. Lorsque le detecteur est associe a un photomultiplicateur, l'information est recueillie sous forme d'impulsions electriques de grande amplitude (quelques volts a quelques dizaines de volts); elle peut etre transmise a distance et enregistree facilement. L'appareil decrit peut etre utilise pour la mesure des flux de neutrons dans les reacteurs (controle de la puissance) et pour l'etude cinetique des reacteurs par la methode des oscillations. Los autores han estudiado un detector de neutrones termicos de corto tiempo de resolucion, constituido por un centelleador gaseoso y un blanco de material fisionable, que presenta las caracteristicas siguientes: intensidad luminosa proporcional a la energia transmitida al gas por los productos de fision, tiempo de resolucion igual a 2,3 · 10-9 s y sensibilidad despreciable a los rayos gamma. Cuando el detector se asocia a un fotomultiplicador, los datos se recogen en forma de impulsos electricos de gran amplitud (que varia entre algunos voltios y varias decenas de voltios) y que pueden transmitirse a distancia y registrarse facilmente. El aparato descrito puede utilizarse para medir flujos neutronicos en los reactores (control de la potencia) y para efectuar el estudio cinetico de los reactores por el metodo de las oscilaciones. Avtory izuchili detektor na teplovykh nejtronakh s malym razreshayushchim vremenem, sostoyashchij iz gazovogo stsintillyatora i misheni rasshcheplyayushchegosya materiala, so sleduyushchimi dannymi: sila sveta proportsional'na ehnergii, peredannoj gazu produktami rasshchepleniya, vremya razresheniya 2,3 x 10-9 sek., neznachitel'naya chuvstvitel'nost' k gamma-lucham. Kogda detektor prisoedinen k fotoumnozhitelyu, informatsiya sobiraetsya v vide ehlektronnykh impul'sov bol'shoj amplitudy (ot neskol'kikh vol't do neskol'kikh desyatkov vol't). Ona mozhet byt' peredana na rasstoyanie i legko registriruetsya. Opisannyj apparat mozhet byt' primenen dlya izmereniya potoka nejtronov v reaktorakh (kontrol' moshchnosti) i dlya kineticheskogo issledovaniya reaktorov metodom kolebanij. (author)
