Comments on occult blood loss in normal subjects measured with 51Cr-RBC's

Description
The interesting patho-physiological question of whether or not normal subjects continually bleed into their gastrointestinal system has not been satisfactorily answered. Reported values for blood loss in normal subjects range as high as 5 ml per 24 hrs. and it is common in clinical practice to accept up to 3 ml per 24 hrs. as normal. The clinical pharmacology literature is replete with studies demonstrating minimal blood loss in normal subjects. However, in a study of 100 normal volunteer males blood loss of 0.44+-0.60 ml(mean+-s) per 24 hrs. has been measured using a standard CR-51 RBC method. Thus the common reporting of higher values of blood loss in the stool of normal subjects remains to be explained. (orig.)
Abstract (German)
Die Frage, ob gesunde Normalpersonen in ihren Gastrointestinaltrakt bluten oder nicht, wurde bisher nicht zufriedenstellend beantwortet. Normalwerte fuer gesunde Personen betragen in der Literatur bis zu 5ml/24h und unter klinischen Bedingungen werden 3ml/24h als normal akzeptiert. Ergebnisse aus der klinischen Pharmakologie belegen jedoch vielfach, dass der Blutverlust von Normalpersonen nur minimal ist. Diese Befunde werden bestaetigt durch eine Untersuchung an 100 maennlichen Normalpersonen, deren Blutverlust in den Magen-Darm-Trakt nur 0,44+-0,60ml/24h( +-sx) betrug gemessen mit einer Standard-51Cr-Erythrozyten-Methode. Berichte ueber hoehere Normalwerte beduerfen daher erneuter kritischer Wuerdigung. (orig.)Additional details
