Comparison of various detector systems for plutonium detection by means of whole-body counters

  • 1. Institut Biofiziki, Moscow (USSR)

Description

A study has been made to compare the sensitivity of Ar/CH4- and Xe/CH4-filled proportional counters as well as of sandwich-type scintillation detectors while using them for direct plutonium detection in whole-body counters. For economical reasons and because of their convenient handling, sandwich detectors are preferred at present in routine examinations, but sometimes, especially in cases with skin contamination which is not identificable by α-detectors, it is necessary to utilize proportional counters.
