Description
The paper describes the functions and applicability of the total human performance monitoring system (THURMOS) which has been developed to investigate the mechanism behind the occurrence of human error. This system examines the conditions and process of errors, during the operation and repair of NPPs, using an approach from the human side of the operation to contribute to the optimization of work conditions and to the improvement of human reliability. The device referred to as THURMOS monitors external signs of human performance such as the physiological functions and movements of up to three persons simultaneously to evaluate objectively (while maintaining freedom from restrictions) the relationship between human performance and errors during operations. The paper first describes the configuration and features of THURMOS. Then it discusses the application of the device, which is equipped with a section to remotely monitor physiological functions and movements, a section to transmit signals to distant locations by radiowaves and a section for computer based automatic processing to evaluate the performance of the subjects being tested. Results of the tests affirmed that continuous and simple measurement of changes in heart rates and respiration rates was possible, depending upon the types of tasks and the burden of information assigned to subjects and the variation of the operators' mental workload and wakefulness level under that load. This finding has confirmed the validity of using the device to evaluate adequately (from the human side) the effectiveness of improvements along the automation of power plant equipment systems by measuring and evaluating performances of up to three workers.
