Why believe in QCD?
Description
This chapter presents a priori and a posteriori evidence for quantum chromodynamics (QCD) obtained by comparing specific QCD predictions with data. Divides the a posteriori evidence into short distance and long distance tests of QCD. Discusses renormalization and the running coupling, the renormalization group, conditions for the use of perturbation theory, high energy tests of QCD, electron-positron annihilations, and deep inelastic scattering. Concludes that QCD provides a semi-quantitative description of the data in ee annihilation and inclusive deep inelastic scattering
