Description
From their neutron scattering measurements, Blagoveshchenskii et al. have inferred the existence of a new branch of free-particle excitations in superfluid 4He in the same wave vector region as the familiar phonon-roton excitations. We report the results of a detailed search for free-particle excitations in superfluid 4He using neutron scattering techniques. To a high level of sensitivity (∼ 0.01 % of the roton intensity) we find no evidence for such excitations. (author)
