Radiation protection within nuclear medicine - a review
Description
The review of radiation protection within nuclear medicine shows that the principle of cost-benefit weighing has come much to the fore thus requiring the clinical specialist for nuclear medicine to adopt it as a guiding principle. Meaningful radiation protection of the patient will be effected only if the benefit of the examination results are at an optimum ratio to the hazard for the patient. Correctly planned and implemented measures can and must safeguard radiation protection of the environment and persons. Diagnosis must not be influenced by considerations triggered by unreflected preference of radiological methods over other competing methods of a similar non-invasive type which are also available today. Optimum radiation protection will always be secured by physicians with optimum training levels. (orig./HSCH)
Abstract (German)
Der Rueckblick auf den Strahlenschutz in der klinischen Nuklearmedizin zeigt, dass immer deutlicher das Prinzip der Nutzen/Risiko-Abwaegung zur Geltung gekommen ist und fuer den klinisch taetigen Nuklearmediziner ein Leitsatz sein muss. Nur wenn der Nutzen des zu erwartenden Untersuchungsergebnisses im optimalen Verhaeltnis zum Risiko fuer den Patienten steht, wird ein sinnvoller Strahlenschutz fuer die Patienten betrieben. Umwelt- und Personalstrahlenschutz muessen und koennen durch richtig geplante und durchgefuehrte Massnahmen gewaehrleistet sein. Ein falsches Konkurrenzdenken zu anderen heute moeglichen Untersuchungsverfahren ebenfalls nicht invasiver Art darf die Indikationsstellung nicht beeinflussen. Den besten Strahlenschutz wird immer der optimal ausgebildete Arzt gewaehrleisten. (orig./HSCH)Additional details
