What does the energy transition cost? Paths to the transformation of the German energy system by 2050
Description
The energy transition in Germany is a declared political goal of the Federal Government. By at least 80 percent, relative to 1990, greenhouse gas emissions are to be reduced by 2050. This requires a massive reduction in energy-related CO2 emissions, which requires a fundamental transformation to a largely decarbonised energy supply structure. However, this conversion, which requires considerable investment, is not a matter of course. Scientists at the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE are now presenting a study on the system and cost development of a climate protection-compatible transformation of the German energy system from today until 2050. The model-based investigation covers all sectors and energy sources and analyzes in detail how Germany can achieve its climate protection goals through measures for the efficient use of energy and the use of renewable energies. Different, cost-optimized transformation paths are shown on the basis of different scenarios.

Additional details
