Faint galaxies and cosmology
Description
The use of faint galaxies to study cosmic evolution is reviewed. Modern and historical studies of radio galaxies are contrasted, and some unusual physical conditions in powerful radio galaxies are described, in particular the large forbidden O II and L-alpha emission lines. The evolution of the radio galaxy population and its physical characterization is addressed, and the use of the starlight properties of distant, luminous radio galaxies to measure the pace of stellar evolution and to make cosmological comparisons is discussed. Finally, the location and utilization of faint, radio-quiet red galaxies are examined. 83 references
