Studies on radiation stability of dibenzo-21-Crown7

Description
The γ-ray initiated decomposition of pure dibenzo-21-crown7 up to an in te grated dose of 1.08 MGy (45 days of irradiation) was studied by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The dose rate of the 60Co γ irradiator used is 1KGy/h. Up to 10 days of irradiation (240KGy) there is fast degradation of pure Dibenzo-21-crown7 and after that the rate of degradation is remarkably slow. The observations were established by infra red spectroscopy. The proposed mechanism of radiolytic degradation of dibenzo-21-crown7, based on the experimental data, is consistent with symmetric initial cleavage of the C-O bond between the terminal C of the bridging diethylether group and the 'O' attached with benzene ring.
