Evolution of 1000-MW pressurized water nuclear power plants in the USSR

Description
At the end of 1985 the installed capacity of nuclear power plants in the USSR came up to 28.1 GW. According to the long-term power programme capacity is intended to be raised up to 41 GW till 1990. With this, application of PWR-type nuclear power plants takes on more and more significance. Development of 1000-MW PWR units is characterized by erection of the prototype unit in the Novovoronezh NPP, the double unit first time employed in the Saporozhe NPP and the Balakovo NPP. The unified design provides erecting individual main buildings for every 1000-MW unit and a single common special building having a capacity of 4000 or 6000 MW when completed. The development of nuclear power plant capacities, technological design and concept of the main and special buildings are considered as well as the Odessa nuclear heat-and-power plant employing 1000-MW pressurized water reactors, including the concept of its site plan.
