Description
For evaporative particle emission the statistical model framework gives a clear route for interpretation of spectral shapes and angular anisotropies in terms of emitter temperature, barrier and rms spin. This paper reviews such interpretations for the reactions (E/A = 6--8.5 MeV) 40Ar + Ag. The same methods are used to characterize the composite nuclei formed by 680 MeV 40Ar + Ag; the authors find ∼4.5 MeV for the initial temperature and ∼60 n for the rms spin. Small-angle correlations between p-p and d-d pairs are measured to give a test of the emitter lifetimes. These measured correlations are compared to reaction simulations made by classical trajectory calculations. The results are consistent with lifetimes predicted by the phase-space, statistical model. This result implies that energy mixing and evaporative particle emission steps occur with intervals of ∼10-22 s, a time period comparable to the traversal time for a projectile velocity of 17 MeV/nucleon
