Description

Two alternative sites for disposal of low level radioactive waste were considered in northern Kazakstan for remediation of uranium mine territory. A safety assessment with respect to the public was utilized in the selection of the site on the basis of the methodology of the IAEA co-ordinated research programme on the safety assessment of near surface radioactive waste disposal facilities (NSARS). The safer site was chosen on the basis of the results presented in the paper. (author). 4 refs, 3 figs
