Thyroid volume in newborns in Macedonia

Description

Iodination of salt in Macedonia has risen since October 1999, the previous iodine content was 10 m gr KI/Kg NaCl (federal law 1956-99). The present content is 20-30 m gr Iodine / Kg NaCl. The volume of thyroid gland in newborn infants (age 1-2 weeks) is normally 0.67 +/- 0.4 ml median value 0,67 ml. The new iodination of salt has a definitive influence on iodine metabolism.
