Russian nuclear energy policy and strategy of the Kurchatov Institute (in view of EU plans for joint nuclear research)

This paper presents a retrospective overview of the Kurchatov institute's activities in the last 65 years. Now it's one of the leasing research centers in Russia, an interdisciplinary national laboratory performing a large scope of studies from astrophysics, particles theory and intranuclear process to the national energy strategy, from nanotechnology and large-scale experiments on controlled thermonuclear fusion to biological and medical research. Nuclear energy and nuclear applications have always been one of the basic priorities of the institute's activities. System energy research, including the analysis of nuclear energy's role in the global and regional energy production in the long term, makes an important component of these activities
