Thyristor bridges for energy transfer between two 100 kJ superconducting coils

  • 1. National Lab. for High Energy Physics, Oho, Ibaraki (Japan)

Description

The first performance transferring energy back and forth between two 100 kJ superconducting coils has been presented. The mechanism of the energy transfer as an interface between the superconducting coils is a thyristorized dc-ac-dc converter. The converter was controlled by digitized trigger circuit and moreover operated by variable switching frequency to maintain voltage on commutation capacitors to be constant. This method makes performance of the converter more stable than another controlled by fixed switching frequency. The losses of the system were estimated and agreed well with the experimental results.
