Effect of copper on austenite recrystallisation in Ti and Ti-Nb microalloyed steels

  • 1. Wollongong University, (Australia)

Description

The effect of copper on the static recrystallization of austenite has been investigated in Ti and Nb-Ti steels, both containing about 1 wt pct copper. Single pass rolling experiments were carried out in the temperature range 850-1150 C with reductions from 10 to 60 percent. It was found that austenite recrystallization was significantly sluggish in Nb-Ti steel compared to Ti steel, and the retardation was more pronounced at lower temperatures (950 C). The recrystallized grain sizes obtained for both steels in the temperature range 950-1080 C were independent of rolling temperature for a given reduction. The activation energy for recrystallization in both copper containing steels was found to be higher than for copper-free steels of similar composition. The role of copper in retardation of austenite recrystallization is discussed with respect to the solute drag effect. 17 refs
