Description

A number of large facilities provide access to SAS X-rays (SAXS) and neutron (SANS) instruments. ANSTO successfully operates one SANS instrument, Quokka, and recently commenced construction of the second SANS instrument, Bilby. The Bilby is a Time-of-Flight instrument. The commissioning of the instrument is scheduled for mid-year 2014. The design (in particular, use of four choppers similar to D33 instrument at ILL) opens possibility to vary wavelength resolution in the wide range (from 4% to 30%) satisfying various requirements. Two arrays of position sensitive detectors in combination with utilization of wide wavelength range (from 2Å to 20Å) provide the capability to collect scattering data of wide angular range without changing experimental set-up. Possible white beam use opens possibility to collect fast kinetics data. Additional hardware add-on will allow instrument use in slit mode and therefore get data at very low Q (~2.10-4Å-1). Proposed sample area set-up is flexible and will allow use of complex sample environment. At the present moment, no polarization equipment will be installed on the instrument. Provision is made to allow installation of more equipment in the future. The presentation will be focused on general concept and the unique features of the new SANS instrument. Also the possibilities of 'non-standard' experiments, which will be available in fields of applied science. In particular, biotechnology and medicine, metal, and magnetic devices industry will be shown. There is great hope for the technical features of Bilby in exploring the needs of scientists working in field of magnetism.
