Numerical simulation of the axisymmetric hollowing instability of a propagating beam

  • 1. Naval Research Laboratory, Washington, DC 20375

Description

Recent simulations have indicated that highly current-neutralized charged particle beams propagating in an ionizable gas are subject to violent axisymmetric instabilities. These instabilities are shown to be excitations of the m = 0, n = 2 hollowing mode, for which there is no adequate analytical theory. A wide-ranging simulation study of the instability mechanism and the parameter range of the instability are presented
