Operation of a streamer chamber in combination with the Conversi hodoscopic tubes

Description

A possibility of designing a neutrino spectrometer based on the Conversi hodoscope tubes with the 8-meter stream chamber. With this aim in view, basic responces of Ne-filled tubes placed into a sensitive volume of the streamer chamber have been investigated. The length of the discharge propagation along hodoscopic tubes as a function of gas pressure within 0.3-0.8 cm range is given. It is established that with the pressure growth the discharge localizes along particle trajectory. Ar (0.2-0.5%) and Ne additions did not allow to increase considerably the brightness of discharges. The dependence of the efficiency of hodoscopic tube response on a 30 ns high-voltage pulse delay has been investigated in detail for various types of glass and for two methods of tube preparation (evacuation up to a pressure of 5 mtorr at 20 deg C; evacuation up to 5 mtorr with further heating at 200-300 deg C for 2-3 hours). An analysis shows that, when the second method is used, the efficiency does not depend on the type of glass. The results obtained testify to a possibility of using joint streamer chamber plus hodoscopic tube system for neutrino detection
