Description
This study was conducted to investigate the possible role of camel milk administration against damages induced by gamma-rays. Female albino rats (100-150 g) were divided equally into four groups each consisting of 12 rats. Group 1: Control animals, group 2: Rats drinking camel milk instead of water, group 3: Rats exposed once to gamma-irradiation (4 Gy) and group 4: Rats drinking camel milk post irradiation for 4 weeks. Blood samples and liver tissue specimens were obtained after two and 4 weeks post-irradiation. Haematocrit value (Ht), haemoglobin concentration (Hb), red (RBCs) and white (WBCs) blood cells count, serum insulin, glucose, cholesterol, calcium and total lipids concentrations as well as cell number, cell size and DNA and total protein content in liver tissue were determined. Gamma-irradiation caused significant disturbances in haematological, biochemical parameters and liver cellular aspects. Drinking of camel milk induced no effect on the tested parameters. On the other hand, combined treatment including camel milk administration post irradiation showed a significant amelioration of unfavourable changes produced by gamma irradiation
