New findings in designing an offgas system for the Wackersdorf reprocessing plant

Description
Minimizing radioactive emissions in a reprocessing plant are examined in this paper. Offgas must be stripped of all liquid and solid aerosols, all gases, organic compounds, and water vapor because of its Tritium content. Different offgases arise as a consequence of the flowsheet used. They can be classed in three categories. Dissolver offgas containing medium amounts of contaminants (aerosols, I-129, H-3, Kr-85, C-14) and arising in small volume flows. Vessel offgas containing small amounts of contaminants (aerosols, I-129) in large volume flows. Vitrification offgas containing large amounts of contaminants (aerosols, Ru-106, Tc-99) in small volume flows. Research and development to reduce the generation of radioactive aerosols and improve the removal efficiencies of offgas purification systems are studied. The results will be used in the design of the WAW offgas systems
