Natural hydrogen: exploration and production have begun but what are the prospects?

Description

Hydrogen can be produced from hydrocarbons, coal or water, but it can also be found in its natural state below the earth's surface. After being discovered by chance while drilling for water or hydrocarbons, this phenomenon is now being further explored. The article provides an overview of what is currently known about why hydrogen is generated underground, how it can be built up, and the geological environments that are favourable to this process. The US and Australia are already actively exploring the phenomenon while France has recently embarked on the process, with French law recognising this natural resource as of 2022

Abstract (French)

L'hydrogene peut etre fabrique, a partir d'hydrocarbures, de charbon ou d'eau, mais on le trouve aussi a l'etat naturel, dans le sous-sol. Apres des decouvertes faites par hasard au gre des forages dedies a l'eau ou aux hydrocarbures, son exploration a desormais commence. Cet article fait le point sur les connaissances actuelles sur le pourquoi de sa generation dans le sous-sol, ses possibilites d'accumulation et les contextes geologiques favorables. L'exploration est actuellement tres active aux etats-Unis et en Australie. Elle commence en France ou la loi reconnait cette ressource naturelle depuis 2022
