Qualitative and quantitative determination of the Fe-phase distribution in Fe-Mn nodules

  • 1. Sofia Univ. (Bulgaria). Katedra po Atomna Fizika

Description

The Moessbauer spectra of some Fe-Mn nodules from the Pacific and the Atlantic Ocean are presented. Fe(OH)3 and FeCO3 are determined to be the most probable iron containing compounds. The compound Fe(OH)3 is prepared by the method described by Hrynkievits et al. The Debye-Waller factor f' of Fe(OH)3 is determined using the dependence of Moessbauer line area on the effective thickness: f'=0.71 ± 0.07. A method for quantitative determination of the partial portions of Fe containing components in nodule samples is proposed. For this purpose the quantitative method of Meisel for determination of phase concentrations in corrosion products has been adapted. (author)
