Description
Forests as ecosystems not only supply the raw material wood but also exert an influence on soils, water resources and many other ecological factors; provide animals with a habitat; and offer as humans a place for recreation. Recently, forests and wood have become of interest to human civilisation from yet another aspect: they constitute a carbon storage. This means that forestry and the forest industries can help moderate the increase of atmospheric CO2 concentrations, which is essentially the result of energetic utilisation of fossil fuels and considered the decisive factor underlying the greenhouse effect. Besides constituting a carbon storage, forests hold an additional CO2 abatement potential which can be realised by continuous utilisation of wood. (orig./EF)
Abstract (German)
Das Oekosystem Wald liefert nicht nur den Rohstoff Holz, sondern nimmt Einfluss auf Boden, Wasserhaushalt und viele andere oekoloigsche Faktoren, stellt Lebensraum fuer Tiere und Erholungsraum fuer den Menschen dar. Wald und Holz ruecken aber in letzter Zeit auch aus einem anderen Blickwinkel in das Interesse der Gesellschaft: Wald und Holz sind Kohlenstoffspeicher. Dadurch kann die Forst- und Holzwirtschaft zu einer Reduzierung des CO2-Anstiegs in der Atmosphaere beitragen, der im wesentlichen aus der energetischen Nutzung fossiler Rohstoffe resultiert und als entscheidender Faktor fuer den Treibhauseffekt verantwortlich gemacht werden kann. Neben dem Kohlenstoffspeicher Wald liefert die nachhaltige Holznutzung zusaetzliche Beitraege zum CO2-Minderungspotential. (orig.)Additional details
