Patients with breast cancer undergoing preoperative dynamic MRI before breast-conserving surgery

Description
In order to reduce local recurrence after breast-conserving surgery, it is important to decrease the remnants of breast cancer by preoperative detection of multiple and intraductal lesions. Between September 1999 and May 2005, 176 female patients underwent preoperative dynamic MRI followed by breast-conserving surgery. The rate of positive margin of the resected specimens among these patients was 15.9% and that of local recurrence was 1.1% after a median follow-up of 72 months. However, the rate of positive margin of the resected specimen among 151 patients undergoing breast-conserving surgery without dynamic MRI was 21.2% and that of local recurrence was 9.3% after a median follow-up of 139 months. It is considered that preoperative dynamic MRI of the breast promotes a reduction in local recurrence rates after breast-conserving surgery. (author)
