3He transport in the superfluid helium film

  • 1. Ohio State Univ., Columbus (USA). Dept. of Physics

Description

In a conventional 'film-flow' experiment using a cylindrical beaker the transport of the adsorbed 3He over the surface of the saturated helium film has been observed. This flow is impeded by the transfer of momentum from the surface to the substrate by 3He quasiparticles in the body of the film. It is believed that the results obtained for the scattering of 3He quasiparticles by the film's surface will also be valid for the bulk since surface measurements of the film thickness have shown that the 4He chemical potential at the surface of the film μ4(P,T,X) is the same as in the bulk liquid. A flow impedance connected with absorption and emission of bulk quasiparticles into and out of the surface has also been observed. (Auth.)
