Studies on a third-harmonic large-orbit gyro-traveling-wave-tube amplifier

  • 1. Institute of Applied Physics and Computational Mathematics, P.O. Box 8009, No. 11, Beijing 100088 (China)

Description

A third-harmonic gyro-traveling-wave-tube amplifier with a smooth cylindrical waveguide using an axis-encircling electron beam is studied. By the use of a novel way of magnetic field tapering, the output efficiency increases from 25% to 39% and the bandwidth increases from 3% to 7.5% compared with the use of a constant magnetic field. Numerical calculations also find that the electron beam reaches a strong bunching state two times before saturation of the radiation field due to the magnetic field tapering
