Contrast enhanced US for defining the risk of tumor emboli detection and distant metastases in advanced and vascularised breast tumors

Full text:Introduction: We studied 24 patients with advanced breast cancer, mammographically and cytologically proven. Following the decision of the Committee on mammary gland at the Specialized Hospital for Active Treatment in Oncology were directed for preoperative or definitive chemical treatment. Materials and Methods: In all patients Doppler ultrasound study and KUE were performed before the chemotherapy after it and preoperatively in cases with adequate therapeutic response. In all patients FNA was performed for cytology or trucut biopsy with histological verification . Prior to treatment, or within 3 months of diagnosis a CT scanning of the thorax and upper abdomen with contrast was performed. After a bone scanning or if needed also directed CT of the the indicated by the isotopic analysis areas is done. Control Doppler studies have been performed during and at the end of the chemotherapy to take into account the effect on the local tumor. Results: Based on our results and from studies data, a clear correlation was determined in locally advanced tumors with rich vascularity with the presence of distant metastases , pleural effusion, and skeleton involvement. Conclusion : In patients with a good therapeutic response found after conducting chemical treatment on the control Doppler during the conservative treatment response, both in terms of tumor size , and in terms of vascularisation
